artist statement:
“The source material for the ongoing series Photographics is largely constituted from advertising photography in contemporary magazines. These photographs have been transformed to some degree after they were captured by a camera. How much of a transformation can these images undergo and still be considered naturalistic, or lifelike? Is it possible that after recording the subject the image could slip backwards into an uncanny valley? Through various strategies of isolation, repetition, and juxtaposition, the Photographics series highlights the qualities of the original images. The resulting images are as much photographs as they ever were.” — Matt avery
